Information on Rail and Tunnel Monitoring

Rail monitoring and tunnel monitoring are a significant part of geotechnical engineering. These systems are particularly designed to monitor manmade structures like railway tracks and tunnels right through their life cycle which includes monitoring while construction, monitoring it when it’s operational, maintaining it and monitoring the safety of these structures also.

Railway monitoring – These systems provide realtime monitoring for the structural conditions of railway tracks as well as monitoring the speed of the trains, weight of the trains on the track while passing as well as location of the train.  This system thus helps in improving the efficiency, reliability and safety of the rails and railways in a smart way. These monitoring systems also reduce the use of electricity, help in detection of potential hazards effectively and much more.

Tunnel Monitoring – These systems monitor the structural health of the tunnel. This helps in improving the safety of the tunnel as well as in optimizing the operations and the maintenance activities as well. In every stage right from the site evaluation and design, while construction for evaluating the impact of geological conditions, the effect of tunnel on its surrounding properties and safety monitoring during the life span of it – tunnel monitoring systems are used.

Thus, tunnel monitoring systems and railway monitoring systems are of great use to humankind.
